Bad News

Middle age is clearly catching up on the Elector Ulrich von Luftberg. Flush from his recent success and the banishing of his enemies in Aschenbach, he was counting on a genteel slide into old age, with his only focus being marrying off his eldest daughter suitably and reaching some kind of rapproachment with his illegitimate son Conrad, as he adapts to life as an invalid. However, it seems this is not to be. Shaken awake last night by his Staatskanzler, he was presented with news from his spies over the border in Aschenbach territory, where the recruiting cantons have been reported in a fervour of activity.

The news is bad – in fact, it’s awful. A spy had infiltrated the training grounds for the army’s general maneuvers, and sent back a series of hurried (but well-detailed and sensitively tinted) watercolours, portraying what he had seen. It’s enough to chill the blood of a far hardier man than the Elector…

More than suitably impressive, indeed!

I can almost hear the sounds of many men marching in unison...

So much for a relaxed retirement.

Good heavens, what a host! Yes, you can almost hear the steady tramp of marching feet, the trumpet calls and shouts of command. Underlying all an air of steely determination. Aschenbach resurgent? The Elector should be worried!

Thanks, everybody! As older readers will remember, I've been working on some 6mm Prussians bought from Bacchus - and here are the infantry & gunners! The whole lot amounts to probably north of 400 figures' worth of effort, one of my biggest painting projects!

The total, incidentally, is 288 Line infantry (6 regiments of 48); 96 Grenadiers (2 regiments of 48) and various mounted officers, artillerists, etc.

Now I just need to work out how to do the paper flags without making a mess...

Did not notice they were 6mm: compliments!

"Middle age is clearly catching up on the Elector Ulrich von Luftberg < > he was counting on a genteel slide into old age, with his only focus being marrying off his eldest daughter": why, why we, old men, cannot age and decine quietly? A few of us have a kingdom and a daughter, others only a daughter, but nevertheless: worries, worries..
